The federal case built out of the two-day March operation in Clallam County that ended at the 7 Cedars Casino is on track to slip past the end of the year.
On July 28, Jonathan E. Karns signed a written waiver of his right to a speedy trial and consented to moving his trial from August 17, 2026, to a date up to and including February 28, 2027.
The same day, Karns’ Public Defender John R. Carpenter filed an unopposed motion to continue the trial and extend the deadline for pretrial motions in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington at Tacoma.
The proposed order filed with the motion would set trial for February 1, 2027.
It asks Judge Tiffany M. Cartwright to find that denying a continuance would deny counsel the reasonable time necessary to prepare, that the resulting delay is excludable time, and that the ends of justice outweigh the public's and the defendant's interest in a speedier trial.
Those are the findings the Speedy Trial Act requires before a court can exclude the time, and the proposed order cites the statute for each one.
The waiver states that Karns was advised of his rights by his attorney and that he acted knowingly, voluntarily and with advice of counsel.
