The Sequim School Board will meet at 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 2, to consider a security policy, future school calendars and a resolution concerning the replacement of Helen Haller Elementary.

Petition organizer Darcy Morrissey is urging supporters to attend. The petition displayed 275 signatures early Monday morning and calls for expanded music instruction and two music rooms at Sequim High School.

The meeting is scheduled for the district office board room at 503 N. Sequim Ave., according to the district’s agenda.

Directors are scheduled to give Policy 6505, Security, a second reading and consider its approval. The district’s policy committee has reviewed the proposal and recommends approval, according to the agenda.

The 2027-28 and 2028-29 academic calendars are also up for approval, along with a resolution seeking a parent-teacher conference waiver.

The facilities agenda includes a resolution titled “Helen Haller New-In-Lieu.” The state Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction uses that term for replacement construction in place of modernizing an existing school, allowing qualifying projects to use modernization eligibility toward state construction assistance.

Replacing Helen Haller and renovating Sequim High School were among the projects included in the district’s $145.95 million construction bond approved by voters in February 2025. The bond package also included school security improvements, a Greywolf Elementary cafeteria and upgrades to athletic and transportation facilities.

The board is scheduled to receive an annual human resources report and a superintendent’s report.

Morrissey launched the petition October 16 on Change.org. It says the proposed high school building plan reduced the number of music rooms from two to one.

“Two music rooms are necessary to meet the needs of our students,” the petition states.

The petition also says choir and band teaching positions have been reduced and seeks additional courses for beginning through advanced musicians.

Its other requests are an orchestra program for grades 4-12 and a district music education supervisor to hire qualified educators and oversee music instruction and curriculum.

In a September 3 report, the district said all five Sequim ensembles that participated in a May trip to Anaheim, California, earned Gold ratings at the WorldStrides Music Festival.

Monday’s consent agenda includes three high school choir travel requests: a competition in Athol, Idaho; All State in Tacoma; and State Solo & Ensemble in Ellensburg.

The public may attend in the district office board room or through Zoom. In-person attendees should enter through the auditorium door, and those wishing to speak should sign in outside the board room. The district asks remote attendees to register by 4 p.m. Monday.

Public comment is limited to 30 minutes overall and three minutes per speaker. Groups may combine their time for one spokesperson, up to 10 minutes. Remote attendees may also offer comments.
